Step 1
Heat the oil and butter in a deep pan, add the onions, sugar, bay leaf and thyme and cook uncovered for approx 30 mins, stirring occasionally, until golden and soft.
Step 2
Pour in the wine and leave to cook off, then add flour, stir well and add the stock. Season with salt and pepper and cook for another 20 mins. Serve with cheese toasties.
